summary

Benedict XVI’s now-famous “ speech ” in Regensburg was not just another academic lecture: it became the catalyst for a cultural earthquake. Far from being a fleeting event, the pontiff’s words ignited a dialogue between Islam and Christianity, while opening a deep chasm of reflection at the very heart of the West. Great thinkers of all faiths and ideologies stepped into the public arena to take a stand. The “ result ”? A truly globalized “ discussion ” where the great questions of our time are at stake:

  • Faith and Reason: Is it possible to reconcile religious belief with critical thinking without falling into fanaticism or nihilism?

  • Modernity and Roots: Can Europe Understand Its Current Identity If It Rejects Its Christian bequest ?

  • The Church and Diversity: How Does Catholicism Position Itself in a Pluralistic and Multicultural World?

In this overview, we examine the immediate events that set the stage for Benedict XVI’s stance, the flood of immediate reactions that swept around the world, and the subsequent reflections that ultimately transformed a university “ lecture ” into a landmark of contemporary thought.
