Nineteenth-century art: historicism and public monuments


Professor Javier Azanza López devoted the first part of his talk to a review of the state of the art of Navarre in the 19th century, programs of study. In addition to architecture, sculpture and painting, he included works on subjects such as the disentailment laws and their effects on Navarre's movable and immovable heritage, the heritage protection work carried out by the Commission of Historical and Artistic Monuments of Navarre, and the teachingof disciplineart at the Public School of Drawing in Pamplona, created in 1828.

He then focused his interest on the expression of the historicism that defined the second half of the 19th century in the different artistic disciplines. In the case of architecture, historicism and eclecticism look to the past for their sources of inspiration, giving rise to monumental buildings which, in the case of Navarre, acquire plenary session of the Executive Councilsignificance in the Primer Ensanche pamplonés, whose execution was the responsibility of positionof the city's most prestigious architects.

For his part, he said that historicism understood as history painting has isolated examples in Navarre at positionof painters such as Miguel Sanz y Benito, Salustiano Asenjo and Inocencio García Asarta, although its greatest exponent is to be found in the decorative programme of the Throne Room of the Palace of Navarre produced between 1861 and 1865, a true historical exaltation of the Kingdom of Navarre with a clear political intentionality. To conclude, he stated that pictorial historicism has its sculptural equivalent in the commemorative monument, a field in which the Monument to the Fueros of Pamplona completed in 1903 and the work of renowned sculptors such as Fructuoso Orduna and Ramón Arcaya, who ended up giving the genre a personality of its own, stand out.
