BRINGING HERITAGE CLOSER. THE BAZTAN VALLEY: MEN, ARCHITECTURE AND LANDSCAPE
From 18 to 21 September 2006
Arizkun, Azpilkueta and Elizondo
PRESENTATION
The Chair of Navarrese Heritage and Art of the University of Navarra gave the course Acercar el Patrimonio. The Baztan Valley: men, architecture and landscape, within the cycle "IV Edition Summer Courses 2006. Navarrese universities for the society of knowledge", under the direction of Dr. María Concepción García Gainza and with the special support of partnership of the Noble Valley Town Council and the University of Baztan, on 18th, 19th, 20th and 21st September. Most of the sessions were held in Elizondo, in the Arizkunenea Cultural Centre, as well as in Arizkun and Azpilkueta.
The main monuments and sculptural and pictorial pieces in the Valley were explained, from the Renaissance churches of Baztan, the Baroque palaces, the architecture of the Indianos of the 19th and 20th centuries, to contemporary landscape painting in Baztan. The course explained and brought the Baztan Valley's own heritage closer to its neighbours and interested parties, also reviewing the main themes that refer to distinguished people from Baztan such as Juan de Goyeneche, Juan Bautista Iturralde de Arizkun, families such as the Jáuregui de Oharriz (Lekaroz) or Elizacoechea de Azpilkueta and others. It dealt with their mentality, foundations and patronage that they exercised in their places of origin, giving rise to a very important palatial architecture and rich legacies of artistic works.
