LECTURE IN ENÉRIZ

Marian iconography on the Jacobean route in Navarre

Dr. Alberto Aceldegui Apesteguía

The lecture addressed the different typologies of medieval Marian imagery, starting with the generic group of the seated virgins, following the road to Santiago, with Our Lady of Roncesvalles. The origin of Marian devotion in Navarre was discussed and how many of the first churches, sanctuaries and even the cathedral of Pamplona were placed under the invocation of the Mother of God. The history, transformations and vicissitudes suffered by each image throughout the centuries were explained, such as the silver covers that many of the images have or the written documents that reveal how they were dressed on some occasions. After making a tour from Roncesvalles through Pamplona, to Puente la Reina, Los Arcos, Sangüesa and Viana, Professor Aceldegui introduced the shorter chapter on the erect images, studying the cases of Pamplona, Olite, etc.

Finally, the case of Our Lady of Enériz was studied, a carving of transition from the Romanesque to the Gothic style, which belonged to the parish of the aforementioned place until it was replaced by a modern carving of the Heart of Mary in the forties of the 20th century, an iconography that was the focus of some of the questions that closed the talk.
