Working in Cultural Heritage

In the framework of the lecture series 'En torno al Patrimonio Cultural: employment opportunities', Ana Yáñez has made a speech in which the main goal has been to present some of the areas related to historical assets in which job opportunities are beginning to emerge, which are likely to expand in the coming years. From this perspective, it was emphasized that work on historical heritage requires a highly qualified staff and multidisciplinary teams that know how to respond to the wide range of needs involved in its conservation and promotion. For this reason, the discussion paper has tried to draw a global panorama of possibilities.

On the other hand, in these times of deep economic crisis, it is of vital importance to explore all the avenues that the work market can offer. For this reason, the tourism sector has not been left out of the picture; it should be borne in mind that last year in Europe cultural tourism generated 335,000 million euros and 9 million jobs work.

Two of the areas in which the need for professionals specialized in the management of historic buildings can be glimpsed are energy efficiency in these buildings and the relations between the elements belonging to Cultural Heritage and the public.

As far as energy efficiency is concerned, issues such as the current state of the art, measures to determine the energy consumption of a building and practical solutions to achieve significant energy savings; possibilities related to renewable energies and the main financing channels that exist are some of the issues that managers of historic buildings should be aware of in order to achieve significant savings and acceptable levels of comfort.

On the other hand, the idea that cultural heritage can only be understood and managed by considering the people who enjoy or live in it is becoming more and more widespread. Therefore, it is necessary to know both the positive and negative relationships, showing and looking for new formulas that involve citizens and visitors in the enjoyment, benefit and treatment in general of Cultural Heritage.
