Some Unique Textiles
As with the gold and silverwork, the parish church of San Saturnino also houses a collection of textiles of great interest from various historical periods, including vestments, mantles, and dresses belonging to the Virgen del Camino.
The first set of liturgical vestments consists of a red chasuble commissioned for use during the feast day of the parish’s patron saint. Comprising a chasuble, a pluvial, and two dalmatics, Alicia Andueza attributes this set to Miguel de Sarasa’s embroidery workshop in Pamplona, dating it to around 1576 and 1584—the years the chasuble and pluvial were made. The set stands out for the richness and quality of its embroidery and the iconography it features. The chasuble depicts scenes from the childhood of Christ; the pluvial depicts the life cycle of Saint Saturninus; and the dalmatics feature the figures of Saints Andrew and Bartholomew, Saint George, and Saint Nicasio—saints closely associated with the parish’s devotions.
The second set, which is white, was commissioned by Parish Priest Melchor de Irisarri in 1868 from the Barcelona workshop of Cayetano Ros e Hijos to be used for the festivities related to the Virgin of the Way and Corpus Christi. It consists of a chasuble, a pluvial, two dalmatics, and a lectern cloth. It is made of white satin with an abundance of raised gold-thread embroidery. All the embroidered decoration is geometric and floral, with the exception of the image of the Virgin of the Way embroidered on the chasuble, the town’s coat of arms on the dalmatics, and the anagram of Mary surmounted by a royal crown on the cape of the dalmatic.
