Location, structure and subject matter
The doorway is located on the southern side of the church, a site adapted to urban planning requirements, as it opens onto the old Pilgrims' Street - now Calle Mayor -, the main axis of city life and the route along which pilgrims used to travel and continue to travel to reach the bridge that crosses the Aragón River next to the church.
The ensemble is basically made up of the doorway and the large crowning frieze, framed laterally by buttresses and crowned by a cornice with its corresponding tiled roof supported by modillions. In turn, the doorway - with a pointed, flared arch - is made up of six archivolts and a chambrana, supported by columns and small columns arranged alternately - those crowned with capitals and equipped with columned statues - and a tympanum. On either side of the arch are triangular-shaped wall panels, the spandrels. The door, buttresses and spandrels are covered with sculptures. The upper frieze is composed of two levels of arcades containing statues.
With regard to the subject matter, it should be borne in mind that the fundamental function of this doorway - like that of almost all Romanesque sculpture - was to transmit a message to the spectators, both to the faithful of Sangües and to pilgrims from the most varied origins; therefore, its main purpose is professor and moralising. The door, the element core topic, is dedicated to the Redemption and the Last Judgement. The sculptures in the spandrels and buttresses have no common programme, and only thematic groups can be distinguished: biblical themes, representations of trades, warriors, sins, animals, ornamental motifs. The upper frieze once again has a different version of the Judgement, although in a different version: topic .
