Introduction

The church of Santa María de Viana has a magnificent scenographic façade in the form of an altarpiece box, which is articulated around a central exedra, forming one of the most outstanding examples of Renaissance architecture in Navarre. The importance of this work will be felt not only in contemporary works, such as the parish church of San Esteban in Murillo de Río Leza in La Rioja, but will even be echoed in later works, especially in the Baroque centuries, as we can see in the façades of San Gregorio Ostiense in Sorlada, Santa María la Redonda in Logroño or Santa María in San Sebastián. This work presents a rich and complex iconography, in which sacred themes are mixed with other profane ones.
