Santa María la Real de Olite: a living heritage
Ms. Mercedes Jover. Chair of Navarrese Heritage and Art.
The lecture on Santa María la Real de Olite: a living heritage, aimed to show some hidden and little known aspects of the beautiful liturgical trousseau of this Navarrese temple. The last intervention of conservation and restoration of its Renaissance altarpiece has allowed an exhaustive study of this cultural asset, which has revealed some of the secrets it concealed. It is worth mentioning that this intervention has brought to light some interesting Gothic mural paintings that the altarpiece covers, now discovered and studied, which were also treated in 2001.

We emphasize that cultural heritage is a valuable bequest to be passed on to future generations, but it is not something inert but a fragile asset that changes and deteriorates, and must therefore be maintained. The conservation and restoration treatments applied are equivalent to operations aimed at prolonging the life of these important assets.

Based on this premise, the goal of this session was to disseminate the complexity and rigor of the conservation and restoration treatments applied to the main altarpiece and the mural paintings of Santa María la Real de Olite, a costly and meticulous task carried out by an interdisciplinary team of heritage professionals and that provides us with a better knowledge of this cultural wealth.
