Navarre City Councils. Merindad of Pamplona
By Eduardo Morales Solchaga
Leiza: an early twentieth century house
The present town hall, which dates from 1915, is located in the main place of the town and came to replace a previous one, built in 1745, following the traces of Ignacio de Lecuona, master builder neighbor of Oyarzun. It formed a rectangular block of ashlar perfectly framed, located in one of the fronts of the place.
The town hall was built during two years (1915-1917), following the design design of the Toulouse architect Guillermo Eizaguirre and under the supervision of the Pamplona architect José Arrarás.
The present Building, of eclectic and purist style, is composed of two levels topped by a central structure ending in a broken pediment. The lower body is opened by nine semicircular arches, supported by pillars on which there are large windows, delimited by powerful pilasters and subdivided into three openings, except for the central one. In the superior finish five rectangular openings are opened, the central one culminated by a triangular pediment, stamped by a complicated coat of arms of the town, that follows the rococo style. On the facade stands the town clock, located on a simple wrought iron structure.
