Vera de Bidasoa: a town hall with neoclassical flavor

The town hall of Vera was built in the last quarter of the 18th century (1773-1776) over another building of the previous century following the designs of Francisco de Galardi, a neighbor of Hernani who was in the town by royal order to supervise the wood conduction along the river. The stonemasons who carried out such a great work business were Pedro José de Alzate, Pedro José de Aguirre, Martín Esteban de Irazoqui and Juan José de Elizondo.

Of late baroque style, its facade is structured in three floors topped by a concave overhanging eave. On the lower floor there are six arcades with lowered arches on ashlar pillars with their corresponding imposts, opening towards the place . On it there are six balconies, all of them without overhangs, except for the four at the ends that are associated with the second level.

The paintings located between the balconies, of undetermined date and with an academic air, in ochre and reddish tones and restored in 1983, stand out from the ensemble. They represent neoclassical cups alternating with the cardinal virtues associated with good government: fortitude, prudence, justice and temperance. The stone coat of arms of the town crowns the whole.
