Presbytery and chancel view

The view of the chevet is enriched by the play of volumes provided by the apsidal cylinders, their corresponding oven vaults and the central dome. This structure that goes from the square of the bay to the octagon of the roof by means of four fan-shaped trumpets has its maximum expression in Navarre in the monastery of Azuelo. As has already been mentioned, its top was rebuilt in the last century. Nevertheless, it conserved part of its lower level.

The view of the main chapel is completely monopolized by the beautiful enamel altarpiece dedicated to Mary and the Child. We must make an effort to divert our gaze to the architectural elements of the chancel. Again everything is very simplified. Only the three symmetrical semicircular windows and the barrel vaults and oven of the presbytery stand out. The characteristics of this part of the building can be placed shortly before 1074, the date of the first consecration of the temple.

It is time to focus on the Romanesque altarpiece, which in the center of the image shines inside the glass urn that protects it. And no wonder.
