The chapel of San Fermín

Academic reform

In January 1795, the orange average and lantern collapsed, its wooden structure affected by damp, resulting in a gap that had to be covered provisional. This led to the need for repair work and, incidentally, to adapt the Chapel's ornamentation to the academic taste already in force, far removed from the initial baroque style it offered. The work was carried out between 1800 and 1805 in accordance with the plans signed and dated by Santos Ángel de Ochandátegui in December 1797. Once the dome was rebuilt, four medallions were placed on its pendentives, within a radiant structure framed by a vegetal garland, with representations of the saints especially linked to Christianity in Navarre, the bishops Saturnino and Fermín, and the presbyters Honesto and Francisco de Javier. The profuse decoration of the entablatures and vaults was succeeded by the current sober, academic motifs. The pillar bases were also simplified.
