Portrait of Don José Yanguas y Miranda

Don José Yanguas y Miranda (Tudela 1782-1863) recorded the history of the place Nueva in his Diccionario histórico-político de Tudela : "The place bullring in Tudela was conceived in 1687 because the new tower that was being built in the church of Santa María was to occupy part of the place de las verduras, where the bullfights had been held until then. For this purpose, the site was chosen opposite the hospital de gracia, at the exit of the gate called Albazares, and the hospital itself was to form one of the four sides of the place, which was to be square. The river Queiles, which ran between the hospital and the city walls, was to be covered with a stone arch, as was the irrigation ditch of the Vencerol field, to form part of the ground of the place as it is today. The owners of the houses that existed on the line of the wall in front of the hospital undertook to give their façades the exterior form that was determined in the plan, as did the hospital; and for the two remaining lines, the bums and sites that were to occupy on the Queiles, and outside it, were sold".
