Another of the necessary steps was the covering of the River Queiles that ran between the Hospital de Gracia and the city walls by means of a "cannon" or stone arch that would later be filled with earth to serve as a floor for the same place. In a first attempt, the work was carried out by Juan de Lezcano, who finished it in 1688, but due to a great storm that caused a flood, the recent "cannon" was ruined. Finally, a new construction was awarded to the master mason José Ezquerra, who covered not only the river Queiles but also an irrigation channel known as "del Vencerol", using stone extracted from the castle of "Sancho El Fuerte".
