On March 5, Professor Claudio Basevi died in Pamplona, at the age of 76, after a long illness. Born in Rome (1942), he arrived in Pamplona in 1970 to fill in his academic training in the School of Theology of the University of Navarra. Two years later, he was ordained a priest. After attending the licentiate degree, he began his programs of study of doctorate and in 1974 he defended his thesis on the interpretation of the New Testament according to St. Augustine. Directed by Professor José María Casciaro, it obtained the maximum grade and was published as volume 14 of the Theological Collection of the publishing house EUNSA.

He was professor of New Testament at the department of Sacred Scripture of the School of Theology, where he also held the position of director of programs of study. He extended his training in the School of Philosophy of the Pontifical University of Salamanca and in 1997 he obtained the doctorate in Philology Bíblica Trilingüe. Between 1988 and 1993 he was Associate Dean of the School of Theology. Full Professor since 1993 and appointed Professor Emeritus in 2004, he retired prematurely due to illness.

An expert in the writings of St. Paul, his academic life was centered on Christology and the history of exegesis. He also published several books on his specialization program and directed eleven doctoral thesis . In addition, he was team member of work of the Navarra Bible, together with professors José María Casciaro (†), Gonzalo Aranda (†), Santiago Ausín, Vicente Balaguer, Francisco Varo and Juan Chapa.

The latter, currently Dean of the School of Theology, emphasized that "he was a man who was passionate about Scripture, who taught and studied in great depth, trying to arrive at the ultimate reasons to answer the questions he asked about the texts".

He also recalled with special affection the enthusiasm that Claudio Basevi showed during his time at the Pontifical University of Salamanca: "He had begun his thesis with great commitment and while he was doing it, the first health problems began. When he presented it to the court, the disease had advanced and writing was a great effort. However, he finished it and was able to obtain this new doctorate with the maximum grade". On the other hand, the Dean has assured that "Professor Basevi had a privileged head, with a great capacity to relate the topic that he studied with other apparently collateral ones. He was also enormously orderly and, probably, his training as a chemist had something to do with this".
