Saint Josemaría Escrivá
Chancellor (1952-1975)
Josemaría Escrivá was born in Barbastro (Huesca, Spain) on 9 January 1902. His parents' names were José and Dolores. He had five siblings: Carmen (1899-1957), Santiago (1919-1994) and three younger sisters, who died when they were children. The Escrivá couple gave their children a deeply Christian Education .
On 2 October 1928, during a retreat in Madrid, he saw what God was asking of him, and founded Opus Dei. From then on he began to work in the foundation, while continuing to exercise his priestly ministry, especially among the poor and the sick. He also studied at the University of Madrid and taught to support his family.
In 1946 he established his residency program in Rome. He obtained the doctorate in Theology from the Lateran University. He was appointed consultant of two Vatican Congregations, honorary member of the Pontifical Academy of Theology and honorary prelate of His Holiness. From Rome he went on numerous occasions to different European countries - and in 1970 to Mexico - to promote the establishment and consolidation of Opus Dei in those places.
With the same aim, in 1974 and 1975 he made two long trips to Central and South America, where he also held meetings at catechesis with large groups of people.
Saint Josemaría died in Rome on 26 June 1975. He was beatified on May 17, 1992, and canonised on October 6, 2002.
The University of Navarre has the Josemaría Escrivá Documentation and Study Centre, the Spanish section of the Josemaría Escrivá Historical Institute, based in Rome. It is a centre of an interdisciplinary nature aimed at promote research into the figure of the founder of Opus Dei.

First visit to the University
During St. Josemaría's first stay in Pamplona (1960), the Estudio General de Navarra (EGN) was erected as the University of Navarra. In addition, St. Josemaría received the distinction of "Adoptive Son of Pamplona", celebrated Holy Mass in the Cathedral, and consecrated a chalice at the high school Mayor Aralar.
First Honorary Doctorates (1994)
As Chancellor of the University, Saint Josemaría presided over the ceremony of submission of the awarding of the doctorate Honoris Causa to Juan Cabrera y Felipe and Miguel Sancho Izquierdo. In addition, during this visit, he was received at the Town Hall of Pamplona, and held various gatherings at the auditorium del high school Mayor Belagua. He also attended the 1st Assembly of the association de Amigos de la Universidad de Navarra.
Shrine of Our Lady of Fair Love of the campus
In April 1967, Saint Josemaría, in a new visit to Pamplona, received the Board of Governing Body of the University, and visited and kissed the Mother of Fair Love at Shrine of Our Lady of Fair Love located at campus.

In October 1967, Saint Josemaría returned to the University to preside over a new investiture of doctors Honoris Causa. In addition, the founder of Opus Dei celebrated Holy Mass on the esplanade of the University's old Library Services , where he delivered the famous homily "Passionately Loving the World".

St Josemaría held discussions with the boards of directors of Theology and Canon Law, as well as with the editors of Pamplona newspapers.
New Honorary Doctorates
In 1972, Saint Josemaría presided over the investiture of Enrich Letterer, Juan Contreras (Marquis of Lozoya) and Paul Ourliac as new Honorary Doctors of the University.
Last visit to the University
Saint Josemaría visited the University for the last time in 1974. After presiding over the awarding of Honorary Doctorates, the founder of Opus Dei took part in a get-together in the Belagua with professors and employees. high school Mayor Belagua with professors and employees.
