Saint Josemaría Escrivá

Chancellor (1952-1975)

Josemaría Escrivá was born in Barbastro (Huesca, Spain) on 9 January 1902. His parents' names were José and Dolores. He had five siblings: Carmen (1899-1957), Santiago (1919-1994) and three younger sisters, who died when they were children. The Escrivá couple gave their children a deeply Christian Education .

On 2 October 1928, during a retreat in Madrid, he saw what God was asking of him, and founded Opus Dei. From then on he began to work in the foundation, while continuing to exercise his priestly ministry, especially among the poor and the sick. He also studied at the University of Madrid and taught to support his family.

In 1946 he established his residency program in Rome. He obtained the doctorate in Theology from the Lateran University. He was appointed consultant of two Vatican Congregations, honorary member of the Pontifical Academy of Theology and honorary prelate of His Holiness. From Rome he went on numerous occasions to different European countries - and in 1970 to Mexico - to promote the establishment and consolidation of Opus Dei in those places.

With the same aim, in 1974 and 1975 he made two long trips to Central and South America, where he also held meetings at catechesis with large groups of people.

Saint Josemaría died in Rome on 26 June 1975. He was beatified on May 17, 1992, and canonised on October 6, 2002.

The University of Navarre has the Josemaría Escrivá Documentation and Study Centre, the Spanish section of the Josemaría Escrivá Historical Institute, based in Rome. It is a centre of an interdisciplinary nature aimed at promote research into the figure of the founder of Opus Dei.
