The high school of Science of the data and Artificial Intelligence (DATAI) and INGKA GROUP- An IKEA Retailer (IKEA) recently organized the first edition of the Datafest Spain datathon at the Digital Hub that the Swedish business has located in Madrid. This first edition brought together more than 120 candidates who competed in teams of 2 to 5 members, composed of university students and young workers, to respond to the challenges posed using machine learning, visualization and advanced analytics techniques. As result, awards were given to five projects that proposed to reduce food waste through machine learning and artificial intelligence.

The participants, who came from more than 20 national and international universities and other educational institutions, faced two main challenges: one focused on reducing food waste in the catering areas of stores and the other on analyzing and predicting store visits.

Among the solutions presented, models were proposed for anomaly detection, time series prediction, clustering, pattern detection and models for measuring the economic and environmental impact of the different strategies proposed.

The jury, composed of members of the University of Navarra and IKEA, has mainly evaluated five criteria: the best in use case based on advanced analytics, the best in insights, the best in prediction, the best in visualizations and the best in making use of external data . The winning teams in each category were, respectively: HIDB, Los Coyotes de Córdoba, Team Turing, Datawolves and Hashing.

The director of DATAI, Jesús López-Fidalgo, has valued this initiative and commented: "One of the main objectives of DATAI is the transfer to society and industry, together with the training in science competences of the data and AI. This subject of activities positions us as a center at the frontier of knowledge and as a point of contact with large companies and partners. I want to thank IKEA for the effort and good work for the development of this event that has helped to spot talent in this field."
