A discussion paper on"Parkinson's disease in the 21st century", at position by Rosario Luquin, neurologist of the Clínica Universidad de NavarraThe second monographic conference on Neurodegenerative Diseases will begin tomorrow. The opening of the meeting, organized by the School of Sciences of the University of Navarra and the City Council of Fitero, will also be attended by the Regional Minister of Health, Marta Vera, and the Mayor of Fitero, Francisco Javier Yanguas.

In the words of Professor María José Calasanz, coordinator of the event together with graduate Diego Rupérez, the choice of the theme for this edition is due to the fact that"society is very aware of these diseases and the impact they have on families".

Parkinson's disease is characterized by a progressive degeneration of the dopaminergic neurons of the substantia nigra. Dr. Rosario Luquin will explain alternatives to existing therapies to treat or slow down the progressive course of the disease, such as brain stimulation or new drug delivery systems, as well as the rise of cell or gene therapy, still in the experimental phase.

In addition to this first workshop dedicated to Parkinson's, on June 14 and 21, Alzheimer's will be discussed from a medical point of view, and families will be informed about the possibilities of financial aid offered by associations such as ANAPAR (association Navarra de Parkinson), AFAN (association of relatives of Alzheimer's patients and other dementias of Navarra) and ADEMNA (association Multiple Sclerosis of Navarra).

The sessions are held in the Fitero Town Hall Plenary Hall, at 7:30 pm.
