The department of Zoology and Ecology of the School of Sciences of the University of Navarra has published, together with the City Council of Pamplona, two books on the diurnal butterflies and wild plants that can be found in the capital of Navarra.

The project, in which professors Enrique Baquero, Mª Lourdes Moraza, Arturo H. Ariño and Rafael Jordana have participated, will be presented on May 10 and 11, when both manuals will be presented and will also be available online at www.pamplona.es.

The books are part of the 'Urban Biodiversity of Pamplona' collection, which already has seven publications. These are distributed free of charge to schools, libraries, universities and other public and private entities, as well as associations working in biodiversity conservation.

The two new works will also be distributed as gifts to citizens who participate in certain municipal activities organized by the Museum of Education Environmental, as the own presentation of the books, open to the public prior registration, which will take place in the Museum itself with the presence of the authors. Each book has been published in 1,500 copies printed on paper from sustainably managed forests.

The works, in detail
On the one hand, the first book, 'Butterflies of Pamplona', is based on work fieldwork and data extracted from the butterfly collection of the University of Navarra. The inventory, on the other hand, is composed of a card for each of the 71 species of butterflies that have been detected in the city, with a description of the species, its biology and a map of its distribution in Navarra, as well as plates with photographs of the diurnal butterflies to help in their identification.

The second volume, 'Plantas silvestres de Pamplona' (Wild plants of Pamplona), aims to increase the knowledge on the species of wild plants and the state of conservation of the natural or semi-natural habitats of the municipality. It includes a chapter with general information about the plants, another with the methodology of the study and a third, with the cards of a selection of 40 wild plants of the city of the total of 175 identified. The cards contain information on the morphology of the plant, its uses and curiosities, the habitat in which it is present, information on the flowering and fruiting season and photos to be able to recognize them.
