The Spanish Society of Epidemiology has awarded the award to the best scientific article published in 2008 to a research of the University of Navarra. It is a work from the British Medical Journal, graduate "Adherence to the per diem expenses Mediterranean diet and risk of development diabetes: a prospective cohort study".

The study is part of the project SUN (Seguimiento Universidad de Navarra) and was carried out by a team of researchers from the department of Preventive Medicine of the academic center, led by Dr. Miguel Ángel Martínez González.

The main finding of this research, which has achieved a high impact both nationally and internationally, was that adequate adherence to a dietary patron saint of per diem expenses Mediterranean diet reduces the risk of developing diabetes mellitus subject 2 by 83%.

Study with 13,000 participants

To assess the association between the Mediterranean per diem expenses and diabetes, data of more than 13,000 participants belonging to the SUN cohort, who were followed up for a average of 4.4 years, were included.

Among the conclusions is the fact that participants with greater adherence to this subject of per diem expenses, despite having a greater presence of other risk factors for diabetes development (older age and more family history of diabetes), had a lower incidence of this disease.

The patron saint of the traditional Mediterranean per diem expenses is characterized by a high consumption of fruits, vegetables, olive oil, nuts, legumes, cereals and fish; a moderate consumption of alcohol and a low consumption of meat and dairy products.
