Mobile reinforces its prominence and increases payment for digital news, according to Digital News Report 2020

The University's report highlights that 62.5% of Spanish users are very interested in local and regional news.

According to the Digital News Report 2020the mobile continues its unstoppable ascent as a star device for news consumptionThe Internet is already used for this purpose by 73% of Internet users in Spain. In one year, its use has grown seven points, and it is also the main device for 58%. This report, the most complete available on the consumption of digital informationis coordinated by the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism at the University of Oxford, and the information relating to Spain has been provided by the University of Navarra. The study combines qualitative analysis with surveys of more than 80,000 people in 40 countries.

According to the study, just four out of ten Spanish users continue to consult news on the computer, which was the most popular device until 2017 and today only maintains that status among those over 65. The online functions of smart and connected TVs (24%) overtake tablets (17%), while smart speakers (3%) and watches (2%) experience timid increases.

The report also highlights that the 12.2% of users paid for digital information over the past year, an increase of 2.2 percentage points. This increase precedes new media-driven charging initiatives, and fits with a global trend of growth in users paying for digital news led by Nordic countries such as Norway (42%), Sweden (27%) and Finland (19%), but also the United States (20%). The profile user who pays for online news is a male under 35 years old with a high level of programs of study and income, who is very interested in information and politics.

Local and regional media, leaders in proximity information

62.5% of Spanish users of Internet news are totally or very interested in local and regional newsbut only one in three 18-24 year olds (34%) are. Newspapers and their websites are the main source for local news in all age groups (47%), followed by television and its digital media (39%). Seventy-three percent get their news from local news media and 50% also keep up to date with local news directly through local non-newspaper sources, such as institutions, groups and individuals. 

The seventh submission for Spain of the report Digital News Report, edited by researchers at the University of Navarra, highlights that 68% of Spanish adults who get information on the Internet combine at least five or more traditional media throughout the week. The audience of newspapers is already mainly digital, while television is followed mainly in its conventional broadcasting. 58% enquiry some news brand that operates only or mainly online.

According to the Digital News Report 2020, only 36% of Spanish Internet users say they regularly trust the news. This is lower level of information credibility since 2015, when it was 34%, and is seven points lower than last year. In addition, only 42% do so in the very media they consume, 6 points less than in 2019. Spain is below the average of the countries analyzed in the study, located at 38%.

Among the various factors that influence the loss of credibility in the media is the celebration of political or social events that polarize society. The majority of Spanish users blame the government, the media and the and national parties of being the main responsible for disinformation (49%), followed by journalists (15%) and citizens (11%). Compared to other countries, Spaniards hold politicians much more responsible than other actors, with 40% of the 40 countries analyzed as a whole holding national politicians responsible.

Sources of access to information

Forty-four percent of news users access news primarily through the news algorithm. social networks and of the search engines. Facebook (44%), WhatsApp (34%) and YouTube (25%) lead the informative use of social networks, Twitter (20%) recovers and Instagram (17%) continues to grow. The latter, driven by the youngest; it reaches 23% among those under 45 years of age and up to 37% among younger adults. Telegram was used by 5% for this purpose in January 2020.
