The biologist and biochemist Fernando Aranda, scientist of the research center Applied Medicine (CIMA) of the University of Navarra, has received the award "Professor Durántez of the LAIR Foundation 2012". It is a recognition to the best original article of research in tumor immunology edited in 2011.

The work, published in the journal Cancer Research, demonstrates the efficacy of an immunotherapy strategy to reject low immunogenic tumors. According to Dr. Aranda, "these are very aggressive tumors that go unnoticed by the immune system. The article shows that the combination of adjuvants together with the delivery of tumor antigens to dendritic cells has a synergistic effect on the activation of innate immunity. This translates into an enhanced antitumor response mediated by the induction of T lymphocytes with more functional capacity and higher antigen avidity. It also has additional advantages: it induces immunity against other antigens present on tumor cells without the need for them to be administered in the therapy, and generates report immunological that prevents the growth of new tumors".

Fernando Aranda is graduate in Biology and Biochemistry and Master's Degree of Cell and Molecular Biology by the University of Navarra. The work published in Cancer Research is part of his doctoral thesis .
