Professor José Javier Viñes, professor for more than 30 years at School of Medicine, died yesterday in Pamplona at the age of 85. A native of Soria, he obtained the licentiate degree in Medicine in 1961 as student of the first promotion of the then Estudio General de Navarra.

He joined the University in 1963 as professor teaching assistant of the subject "Hygiene and ambulatory health", and served from the following year as professor manager of the subject of his specialization program of Preventive Medicine and Public Health until 1995. "José Javier was my predecessor at the head of subject of the sixth year of Medicine. For me it was a great challenge to be able to continue his career, given his great achievements for Navarra and for Public Health," recalls Professor Miguel Ángel Martínez-González. "At the same time, it was an honor to take over from him at the University, where he had previously trained many generations of physicians in our area of knowledge."

Considered as one of the main precursors of his specialization program, he was one of the founders of the Spanish Society of Preventive Medicine, Public Health and Hygiene in 1976. "He has been a leading figure having been at the forefront of several initiatives ahead of his time, such as the founding of our specialization program at Preventive Medicine and Public Health, his participation in the lecture of Alma Ata of Primary Health Care, where he represented Spain, the implementation of early detection programs for breast cancer in Navarra, also pioneers in Spain, and the magnificent cancer registry of Navarra, one of the best, if not the best, in the country," Martínez-González points out.

In addition, throughout his career he has worked at management as provincial head of Health of Navarra, director general and undersecretary of the Ministry of Health and Social Security or director general of Health and Social Welfare of the Government of Navarra. He was also mayor of Pamplona, member of the regional parliament and senator. He was married and father of four children and grandfather of nine grandchildren.
