Pope Francis appoints Calixto Paulino Esono Abaga bishop of the new Diocese of Evinayong

Pope Francis has appointed Calixto Paulino Esono Abaga bishop of the new diocese of Evinayong (Equatorial Guinea). Formerly student of the School of TheologyHe was currently President of the seminar Menor and parish priest in the Equatoguinean town of Bata.

Between 2003 and 2005 he studied the licentiate degree in Sacred Theology at the University of Navarra and his thesis focused on "Christocentrism in the catechesis of John Paul II".

Pope Francis created on April 1, 2017 the new Equatoguinean dioceses of Evinayong and Mongomo. This has meant the division of the Dioceses of Bata and Ebebiyin. Both will depend on the jurisdiction of the Archdiocese of Malabo.

The new diocese of Evinayong comprises the entire civil province of South Central, whose capital is Evinayong. It has a population of 71,590 inhabitants, of whom 50,000 are Catholics. It has 13 parishes, spread over an area of 9,932 square kilometers, and 18 diocesan priests.
