The Chair of language and Basque Culture of the University commemorates the 50th anniversary of the Etniker groups.
He has edited six videos that cover his history and his intellectual contribution to the knowledge of Basque ethnographic culture.
The group of research Etniker is 50 years old. To commemorate the anniversary, the Chair of language and Basque Culture of the School of Philosophy and Letters of the University of Navarra has edited a series of six videos that tell its history and take stock of the intellectual contribution of the group to the knowledge of Basque ethnographic culture.
The work of the research Etniker groups is one of the main legacies of José Miguel de Barandiaran, the first director of the Chair of language and Basque Culture of the University of Navarre. After Etniker Navarra was set up in 1969, the groups of Bizkaia, Alava, Gipuzkoa and Iparralde were formed, with a common goal and methodology, but with autonomous functioning.
The partnership of the different groups, which have been meeting annually since 1976, led to the creation of the association Etnográfica Etniker Euskalerria (1991). Their research has resulted in eight volumes of the Ethnographic Atlas of Basque Country, a study of customs, ways of life, religiosity and popular beliefs in the Basque area.
"We had planned to hold a meeting to reflect on the future of a long-standing, but also highly topical, project . We wanted to bring together the most outstanding active members of the different regional groups, but due to the current health circumstances, the commemorative workshop has taken the form of editing these videos", explains Naiara Ardanaz, deputy director of the Chair of language and Basque Culture. There are also plans to publish a collective work that will bring together these interventions, as well as other contributions on the value and future prospects of the project Etniker.
