Professor Tim Minshull, researcher of the School of Ocean and Earth Science of the National Oceanography Centre of the University of Southampton (UK), will give a talk at the School of Sciences of the University of Navarra on global warming in the oceans, promoted by the area of Environmental Biology.

Specifically, the expert will explain how methane hydrate, released as result of global warming in the oceans, may be driving the greenhouse effect. In this regard, in 2008, hundreds of methane gas plumes were discovered escaping from the seabed in the Svalbard Sea (Norway).

A gas leak that some experts have attributed to warming of the water in the deep ocean and is also considered episodic, as the methane oxidizes and dissolves in the ocean without reaching the atmosphere. However, other experts point out that the presence of methane in the ocean could alter the Arctic marine Biochemistry and its ecosystems.

The lecture will take place tomorrow, Friday 4, from 12 to 14 h. at classroom 1 of the Chestnut Building.
