Berta Lasheras, professor of Pharmacology at the University of Navarra, warned that "approximately 3% of emergency consultations are due to the harmful effects of drugs". The expert advised that "it would be useful to have a family pharmacist". In her opinion, "good coordination between the pharmacist and the primary care physician could solve many problems that arise in the elderly as a result of the use of drugs".

The co-director of the summer course "Aging and disease", framed in the program of the Regional Government "For the society of knowledge", gave a speech at lecture on medicines for the elderly. She insisted that "the consumption of medicines in these patients should be the one they need and that, in addition, it should be effective and safe".

Consumption of drugs: 4 in outpatient clinics and up to 8 in hospitals

According to Berta Lasheras, "the correct use of each drug must be achieved and the patient or their caregivers must be properly informed about its benefits and risks". She also warned of the high consumption of drugs by the elderly, "some four in the outpatient setting and up to eight in hospitals and geriatric residences".

On the other hand, he added that "pharmacies are promoting the use of personalized dosage systems, such as tool , which facilitates good compliance and the detection of drug-related health problems". To make it easier for the elderly to take medication, "it is necessary to personalize the pharmaceutical form (solutions, injectables, syrups, etc.), whenever there are possibilities to do so, and to carry out a pharmacotherapeutic follow-up".
