The Vice President of academic staff of the University of Navarra, Manuel Casado, and the counselor of Education and Culture of the Government of Navarra, Jesús Laguna, signed an economic agreement to digitize and make the bank of data of the photographs of the Monumental Catalog of Navarra.

This work is made up of a collection of almost 35,000 photographs, which will be digitized and made available to researchers in a classified and ordered database .

This process culminates the work of the Monumental Catalog of Navarra, a work that constitutes a detailed record of the movable and immovable assets of the historical-artistic heritage of the region, which was initiated in 1998 by a team led by Professor Concepción García Gaínza, director of department of Art History at the University of Navarra.

20 years of computerized use of work

According to Professor García Gaínza, "this entire photographic collection was formed over twenty years of work fieldwork in all the localities that make up the geography of Navarre, and constitutes a very rich file on the historical and artistic heritage of the region".

After this first phase," he continued, "we are now facing a second stage. In it we are going to create a database of the digitized photographs, so that each of the works has the necessary information to identify the image and facilitate the specific or combined search of the collections".

The purpose of this cataloguing is, as the professor of the University of Navarra indicated, "to serve as financial aid for future research on the history of Navarrese art. In addition, it will constitute a fundamental instrument for the conservation of the heritage of our community".
