On March 5, prospective students of Degree at design, which will be taught in the School of Architecture from the next academic year 2016-17, participated in a workshop with the designer Santos Bregaña, in which they tried to design"the perfect mug".

The session, which is part of the activities of the conference Introduction to design, started after 9 am in workshop 2 of the ETSA, with a exhibition by Bregaña of what he means by design: "The design seeks to sublimate an object that already exists . The designer, unlike the artist, always knows where he wants to go; what he doesn't know is how; there are many paths, not just one, and this is very interesting".

Among the characteristics of the profession, he wanted to point out the ability to "sneak" into the culture and build it and the environment, but in a very particular way,"the design has the ability to get into the everyday without people noticing it. The cup, for example, is apparently silent, you don't notice it, but with it you share something intimate, you create an atmosphere of closeness, trust".

In this more theoretical part of the workshop, in which Bregaña explained his journey through the world of porcelain and spoke about the history of coffee and its characteristics, he insisted that "there are no things 'from design' and others are not. Everything has design, which can be better or worse, author or anonymous, but everything created is designed".

When talking about the way of working, the speaker emphasized that"the designer has to be like a naturalist who goes out into the forest, not looking for inspiration, in his work there must be work and observation. I recommend you to always go with a notebook to write down, draw, so that your hand is like a seismograph of thought, that builds things".

After the exhibition, the prospective students, who were given a folder with sheets of paper, pencils and some packets of fimo, went to the laboratory of the School, where, after Bregaña gave them the pertinent indications as to measurements and characteristics, they had to draw a sketch of the cup they were going to model, which they would then bake, in search of that "perfect cup". All this, as Bregaña recalled, always "with the aspiration of providing the objects with poetic functionality, as well as internship".
