Javier Lipúzcoa, Victor López and Hugo Ruiz-Taboada, graduates of the University of Navarra's School in Economics and Business Administration, have designed a business plan to help manage the Monkole hospital, located in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The three economists dedicated their vacations to the implementation and advice of the management of the new hospital center in Kinshasa, which will grow from 40 to 150 beds.

"The idea was to create a business plan that could be useful to better manage the activities of a complex hospital where more than 45,000 patients are already seen at enquiry and where there are 4,000 operations a year," explained Hugo Ruiz-Taboada. In this way, "we made a strategy to obtain a loan from the French agency development of several million euros to finance the equipment of the new hospital under construction".

Also, in addition to participating in different social contests thanks to which they have obtained contributions, they launched "Amigos de Monkole". A program that raises funds for attend for sick children from families without economic resources. "We do it via ONAY, a public utility NGO that manages donations and delivers them in full to the hospital."

A long-term work deadline

The three bilingual Business Administration and Management graduates began collaborating with the hospital two years ago. "In our first meeting we set as our objectives to help in the day-to-day operational and financial management and in raising funds to finish building the hospital," says Hugo Ruiz-Taboada.

The latter goal was carried out together with the Belgian NGO ACTEC, with which they developed a presentation of project that served to raise a significant amount of hedge fund money "for the construction and equipping of a diagnostic conference room and the laboratory of the hospital".

Javier Lipúzcoa, Víctor López and Hugo Ruiz-Taboada finished their programs of study at the University of Navarra in 2006. Currently, Javier Lipúzcoa works as consultant at McKinsey & Co., after having completed an MBA at Harvard Business School; Víctor López works at ING's Mergers & Acquisitions department in Madrid and Amsterdam. Hugo Ruiz-Taboada, who worked at Goldman Sachs in London, is currently working in the private equity world at Magnum Capital.
