Pope Francis has appointed Mons. Eduardo José Castillo Pino as the new archbishop of Portoviejo (Ecuador). A native of Guayaquil, he had been apostolic administrator of the same diocese since 2012.

Bishop Castilló studied the first course of high school program in Theology at the University of Navarra in 1989-90. He received priestly ordination on November 20, 1994 and was incardinated in the Archdiocese of Guayaquil. In 1998 he obtained the licentiate degree at the Pontifical University of the Holy Cross in Rome, and in 2000 the doctorate in Dogmatic Theology at the same academic center.

Throughout his priestly ministry he has carried out the pastoral position of parochial vicar in the Church of the Sagrario in Guayaquil (1994-1996), as well as director of the programs of study in the seminar Mayor "Francisco Xavier de Garaycoa" of Guayaquil (2000-2008), and professor of the School of Theology for the Laity in this same period. In 2008 he was appointed episcopal vicar and pastor of the Vicariate of Santa Elena of the Archdiocese of Guayaquil.

In the heart of the Ecuadorian Episcopal lecture he has been manager of the Sub Commission of Doctrine of the Faith and, until now, he is the President of the Episcopal Commission of Ministries and Consecrated Life.
