"A classic among the Spanish masters of the 20th century. Landscape made architecture; modernity without attributes with a vocation for permanence". This is how architect Julio Cano Lasso's work is defined by Juan Luis Roquette, researcher of the University of Navarra. School of Architecture Juan Luis Roquette of the University of Navarra, who recently defended his doctoral thesis after the work developed with the support of the family of the Madrid designer.

Of his multifaceted figure, Juan Luis Roquette underlines "the virtue of knowing how to go unnoticed, like his own buildings in the landscape", and adds: "His works have the capacity to improve those enclaves where they are located with resounding force, respecting nature and without altering its essence". Likewise, the new doctor emphasized the contemporaneity of this architecture: "Being modern, Cano Lasso did not pretend to be 'fashionable' and that is why he is still current. His works are still today true lessons in sustainability".

Architect with a vocation

Julio Cano Lasso (Madrid, 1920-1996) graduated in 1949 from School of Architecture in Madrid, obtaining the award Extraordinary End of Degree degree program. In 1951 he obtained the degree scroll of Urban Technician, date from which he participated in numerous competitions, in addition to working in the high school National of Industry and, later, in the General Administration of Urbanism. A consummate draftsman, he was also a professor of Projects at School of Architecture in Madrid during the sixties.

In 1991 he joined the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando and received the Gold Medal of Spanish Architecture. His extensive career includes the Labor Universities of Almería and Orense, the PPO Centers, the Buitrago Telecommunications Center and the residential building on Basílica Street in Madrid, as well as a wide range of single-family homes. His last public appearance took place in 1996, at the classroom Magna of the School of Architecture where this doctoral thesis was defended.

Juan Luis Roquette Rodríguez-Villamil (Cádiz, 1977) graduated as an architect from the University of Navarra (2002). He has been professor teaching assistant of the department of Projects of the academic center and currently teaches design Industrial at the School of Engineering of the University of Navarra, work that combines with his professional work in the study AH&Asociados Arquitectos.
The doctoral thesis has been directed by Juan Miguel Otxotorena and the defense tribunal was composed of Alberto Campo Baeza, Carlos Labarta Aizpún, Miguel Ángel Alonso del Val, Carlos de San Antonio Gómez and Carlos Naya Villaverde, who unanimously awarded the grade of A cum laude. Among those attending the ceremony was one of Julio Cano Lasso's sons.
