In awarding him this award, the Jury wanted to highlight his independent attitude in the face of the peculiar press regime he lived under. They also took into account his commitment to the defense and promotion of human dignity and other aspects, such as Delibes' concern for achieving a good team work ; the coherence of his journalistic work with ethical values, especially his commitment to the truth; and finally, his work as a trainer of future journalists (Manu Leguineche, José Jiménez Lozano, Alonso de los Ríos...).

On the occasion of the writer's death, Rosa Fernández Urtasun, vice-dean of the School of Philosophy y Letras, said today that Miguel Delibes "has been able to deal, with a careful but simple and accessible language, with deeply human themes", to which she added that "these qualities have made him an author appreciated by a wide and varied public. That is why El camino, Cinco horas con Mario or Señora de rojo sobre fondo gris are novels that have been widely read and are still being read, both in Spain and abroad".

Regarding the author's contribution to contemporary literature, staff , the professor considered that Miguel Delibes leaves "a look at man full of tenderness, which makes his social criticism not to become bitter, as well as an effort to use a traditional, rich and precise language".

A keen insight into human nature

It should also be remembered that the School of Communication hosted the doctoral thesis "Vida y obra periodística de Miguel Delibes", developed by José Francisco Sánchez and directed by Full Professor Manuel Casado. In the defense of the research, which took place in January 1987 and received the highest award grade, the writer from Valladolid himself was present. Based on work, Professor Sánchez wrote the book Miguel Delibes, periodista, published in 1989 by publishing house Destino.

Likewise, the University of Navarra proposed to the Swedish Academy the candidacy of the author Spanish for the 2001 Nobel Prize in Literature award . The then President, José María Bastero, explained that the proposal was not only endorsed "by the literary work of candidate -which constitutes a fundamental reference letter of the literature in Spanish of the second half of the 20th century-, but also by the dignity of his vital trajectory, in which an exemplary journalistic work stands out, distinguished by his commitment to the right to information of the citizens in times of iron political censorship".

"Novels such as El camino, Cinco horas con Mario or Los Santos Inocentes, in which some of the main themes of literature are present, such as man's relationship with nature, social injustices, or the sense of pain, are enduring examples of the depth of his style, sustained by a penetrating understanding of the changes experienced by Spanish society in this century, and a solid and acute vision of human nature, which has given universal repercussion to his work, as demonstrated by its extensive translation into other languages," he stressed.
