The School of Architecture of the University of Navarra hosted last Friday, March 10, the workshop "The Passivhaus standard from the experience of life".

The meeting was organized by Bau Passivhaus, business Navarra specialized in passive standard construction, with the partnership of the School of Architecture and Arkimo, an architectural firm focused on sustainable projects and passivhaus construction.

The workshop hosted the submission Passivhaus certification of the homes Casa Arkarats and Casa Mikeleiz, awarded by the Passivhaus Institut (PHI), the leading international authority on the development of this building concept. The certificate corroborates that the passive measures applied in the project of the two houses meet the criteria established by the standard in terms of energy consumption, thermal performance and indoor comfort.

Among others, the founder of Bau Passivhaus, Eduardo Arias, the architect of Arkimo, Wolfgang Berger, and the deputy director of the Master's Degree in design and management Environmental Buildings of the School of Architecture, Purificación González, participated.

During the event, different talks were given on the challenges facing sustainable construction, the principles of the passive standard and the process of building a house of this subject. In addition, attendees were able to learn about the benefits of living in a passive house in terms of energy savings, thermal and acoustic comfort from the experience reported by the owners of Casa Arkarats and Mikeleiz.

Energy optimization

The goal of the passive standard is to achieve maximum energy efficiency by taking advantage of climatic conditions effectively and without actively using energy or resources to heat or cool the building.

A "passive house" is characterized by achieving year-round indoor conditions of very high comfort with a minimum of energy expense , between 80% and 90% less than a conventional house.

According to data collected by the Building Passivhaus Platform, Navarra is, together with Catalonia, the region with the highest issue of PHI-certified homes in Spain, five in total. In Spain as a whole, the figure is 25 buildings.
