"Raising children's awareness of how they should act in the event of an earthquake can prevent accidents in the future. Pedagogy, together with urban planning, are measures that should accompany seismic-resistant construction standards, which alone do not save lives or mitigate disasters." Antonio Aretxabala, geologist of the School of Architecture of the University of Navarra, thus explained the purpose of the various conference that he will offer in schools throughout Spain to raise awareness among students about the importance of knowing what seismic movements consist of. The professor of laboratory of Building has launched these activities on his own initiative and altruistically.

The first session took place on Thursday, December 15 at high school Cardenal Ilundáin de la Rochapea, in Pamplona. There he will address more than a hundred students in 5th and 6th grade of primary school.

Also, on Friday 16, he gave another one at high school Marquesa de Viluma de San Pantaleón de Aras, in Cantabria. "It is an area very close to the epicenter that in 1938 produced the largest known earthquake in what is considered the least seismic area of the peninsula. It was 4.9 on the Richter scale and VII on the Mercalli scale; there are still old people who remember it," he points out.

On Tuesday 20, he offered a lecture in Vitoria to parents and students of the Angel Ganivet, Escolapios and Marianistas schools. In 2012, other talks will be held in Zaragoza, Madrid and San Sebastian.
