A Full Professor of the University bets on "personalized nutrition for disease prevention".

Professor Alfredo Martínez has been admitted to the Royal Academy of Pharmacy of Catalonia.

Alfredo Martínez, Full Professor in Nutrition at the University of Navarra, has been admitted to the Royal Academy of Pharmacy of Catalonia. During the inauguration, the expert gave a speech speech on"Personalized nutrition based on Genetics ".

In his opinion, "scientific advances related to a better understanding of metabolism and the diagnosis and prognosis of a disease have made it possible to procure nutrition that is unique to each individual.""Personalized nutrition contributes to the maintenance of health along with the treatment and prevention of diseases," the expert pointed out.

During his speech, he explained that personalized nutrition is based on the principle that food can be health or risk factors for various diseases in a differentiated way among people: "The way in which an individual responds to nutrient intake depends on environmental, social, pathophysiological and genetic factors". According to the expert, "personalized nutrition considers these factors as well as including unique aspects of each person such as personal preferences, intolerances or allergies".

In conclusion, he outlined some of the current scientific challenges facing the personalization of diets, such as advancing the safety and benefits of genetic testing, developing new technological processes and methods for assessment of food intake, implementing public health policies, ethical and legal regulation, incorporating its application to the clinical internship and reducing its production costs.

Alfredo Martínez is a member of high school de research Sanitaria de Navarra (IDISNA) and of research center Biomedica en network-Fisiopatología de la Obesidad y la Nutrición (CIBERobn). He also directs the research center in Nutrition at the University of Navarra where he leads several international researches in the areas of Nutrition, Obesity and Health focused on programs of study cellular, animal models, as well as other nutritional intervention, epidemiological and genetic projects. He is also president-elect of the International Union of Nutritional Sciences (IUNS) for the period 2017-2021.
