José Torero, Full Professor of Fire Safety Engineering at the University of Edinburgh, said at the University of Navarra that "to achieve good fire protection, we have to better understand the new construction trends".

The expert came to give a seminar on Fire Protection at Building, organized by the department Building of the School of Architecture of the academic center. "The status of Spain in this subject is complex. We could not say that it is good or bad, but it is true that there is a combination of market liberalization in a discipline in which there is little knowledge and without correct mechanisms of accreditation", he explained.

During the workshop, attendees studied fire protection engineering; evacuation, detection and alarm as part of the protection strategy; active control and extinguishing systems as a complement to the fire department response; or passive protection and the behavior of Structures in case of fire.

José Torero carries out activities of research in multiple areas related to fire safety: from the analysis of evacuation problems, to the study of structural behavior.

He currently holds the Chair in Fire Safety Engineering at the University of Edinburgh, is director of the high school Infrastructure and Environment and director of the Building Research Establishment Centre for Fire Safety Engineering. He has also investigated disasters at Building such as the Windsor Tower in Madrid and the World Trade Center in New York.

The inauguration of seminar was also attended by David Sainz Jiménez, director of the Navarra Emergency Agency and César Martín Gómez, coordinator of conference.
