200 professionals, students and staff professor of the School of Nursing of the University of Navarra paid tribute to their patron Saint Elizabeth of Hungary on November 20 with a program of activities that focused on Alzheimer's disease.
In a roundtable moderated by the Vice-Dean of Students, Inmaculada Serrano, three experts approached the disease from different perspectives: research, interdisciplinary and from the point of view of the family. For the professor of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Alberto Pérez Mediavilla it is a multifactorial disease,"there is no single cause" he said, and pointed to age as the most important risk factor.
For his part, José Joaquín Roldán, director of the Josefina Arregui Psychogeriatric Clinic, emphasized "the care multidisciplinary of the disease in which doctors, nursing professionals, physiotherapists, etc. participate and in which there is still much work to be done so that people suffering from the disease are properly cared for".
Finally, Professor Ana Canga, from Nursing Care for Adult Patients, spoke about the role of the families of Alzheimer's patients. In her opinion, there are two important features that health professionals should take into special consideration: on the one hand, the impact of the disease on family members and, on the other, the care they need.
The Patron Saint's Day events began with the celebration of a Mass at chapel of Sciences, and were completed with a collection for the victims of the typhoon in the Philippines.
