The University of Navarra launches an innovative strategic plan for the medical area , in order to promote the integration of the Clinic, the CIMA and the School of Medicine, following the Anglo-Saxon model .

The Full Professor Jesús San Miguel will be the new director of Clinical and Translational Medicine at the University of Navarra, for the development of this project.

Alfonso Sánchez-Tabernero, President of the University of Navarra, said that "this model has been adopted with the goal to enhance the integration of the attendance health, the research and the teaching that is carried out in the Clinic, the CIMA and the School of Medicine".

Dr. San Miguel, who will join us soon, will be the manager of the design of the strategy of the three centers at subject scientific and research, as well as the unification of their objectives. His functions will be integrated into the respective governing boards. Specifically, he will be the new medical director of the University Clinic, replacing Dr. Nicolás García at position . He will also be Associate Dean of the School of Medicine and member of the board board of directors of CIMA.

He/she will be in charge of promote the interaction between the research of the CIMA and the School of Medicine and the clinical activity of the Clinic, promoting a translational research , which unites the basic and clinical research looking for solutions of application to the patient. It will also establish the strategy in the implementation of new clinical areas, innovative projects for the attendance, or the assessment of the proposals by the Departments or services.

Biography of Dr. Jesús San Miguel

Dr. Jesús San Miguel Izquierdo, a native of Soria, is graduate in Medicine and Surgery from the University of Navarra (1976) and PhD from the University of Salamanca (1981). Until now he was head of the Hematology Service of the University Hospital of Salamanca, scientific director of the high school of research Biomedical of Salamanca (IBSAL) and Full Professor of Hematology of the School of Medicine of the University of Salamanca.

He is the author of more than 600 articles in international journals, 141 articles in national journals and 126 book chapters and monographs. As researcher he has participated in 51 national, 7 European and 2 American research projects. His three main areas of research are multiple myeloma, leukemia biology and its prognostic implications, and minimal residual disease.

The new director of Clinical and Translational Medicine of the University of Navarra has been an evaluator of academic staff in institutions such as Mayo Clinic, MD Anderson Cancer Center, Emory University, New York University, University College of London, and Harvard Medical School. Among the main awards he has received, it is worth mentioning the award of the CEOE to the research Scientific in Biomedical Sciences (2001), the award Nacional de research (2007), the Waldenström Award (2007), the Kyle Life Achievement Award (2012) (second European to obtain these last two distinctions), and the European Hematology Association-Careers Award (2012) (highest distinction of the European Society of Hematology). He has recently been awarded the award Rey Jaime I to the Medical research 2013.

Dr. San Miguel is in possession of the Cross of Merit of the Ministry of Defense for his contribution to the Balkan Syndrome, and the commendation of the Civil Order of Health.
