Architect Roberto Ercilla stated at School of Architecture of the University of Navarra that the Building that has been carried out in Spain in recent years has been "careless" from the point of view of respect for the environment.

"There is little will to generate sustainable places because consumption has prevailed over reflection. The strategy may be that sustainability in construction becomes fashionable and becomes a visible factor of quality, so that it is attractive to citizens, beyond being an obligation imposed by the rules and regulations", he explained.

The expert made these statements on the occasion of his lecture at the inauguration of Master's Degree in design and management Environmental Buildings (MDGAE), which is being attended by 8 students from Spain and Mexico. The event was attended by Enrique Maya, mayor of Pamplona and former student of the School of Architecture; Mariano González Presencio, director of the School; Ana Sánchez-Ostiz, director of the program; and Eduardo Domingo, director of development.

Conciliation between design andsustainability
Roberto Ercilla stressed that Spain has "all the advantages" to develop sustainable architecture: "It is a democratic nation and has conditions of sun, wind and water that would allow great improvements to be made. If Germany had these factors, it would have done wonders; its environment is less favorable and it surpasses us in this field because there is a great awareness of the environment there".

Among the difficulties facing architects, he pointed out that design and sustainability have yet to be reconciled when designing buildings. "The artifacts - solar panels, windmills... - are still too visible. The way forward is integration: houses that work well and are natural," he said.

In that sense, he highlighted the importance of research, both in academia and industry. "For example, the efficiency of solar panels and silicon is currently being increased; when progress is made, reducing its issue we will obtain more performance," he concluded.
