The group of research in recent history from the School of Philosophy and Letters of the University held last Wednesday, November 20, a seminar on the financial aid Humanitarian in the Spanish Civil War. The session was given by Gabriel Petrus, Research Associate in the Department of History at the Royal Holloway University of London, who has recently published the book Humanitarian Relief in the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939).

The expert in the subject explained that the origin of the research came from the tutor of his thesis , who directed him to this topic because he saw that nothing had been written about this subject of aid during the Civil War. "I was struck by the fact that people from England, France and Switzerland came to Spain to help when they were not earning anything," said Gabriel Petrus.

"In Spain, organizations that were not Spanish acted. At first, the first financial aid was for the Republic, but later they did not refuse to help Franco's side," the expert pointed out. The financial aid came from the English and American Quakers, from the Swiss International Service, from the Swiss and English Save the Children, and from 1937 from the International Commission of financial aid to the Spanish children. On the other hand, he said that he would like to do more research on this topic, especially on specific people who did a lot of work during those years.
