"Without interviews there would be no journalism" is one of the quotes that Fernando López Pan, professor of Journalism at the University, highlights in his interview with journalist, guest lecturer at School of Communication and former student Sonsoles Echavarren. Both collaborate in the recently published book "Entrevistas vivas en la tradición de un género" (Live interviews in the tradition of a genre). In it, they combine theory and internship, to offer a new vision of the interview and vindicate its role as tool of work and as a journalistic genre in itself.
The book consists of three sections: the first is an interview by Fernando López Pan to Sonsoles Echavarren, on the interview and its fundamental role in journalism; the second, a essay signed by López Pan that reflects on the essential aspects of journalism and what the interview can contribute, with recommendations on its structure and phases; and, finally, the third part consists of a selection of 37 interviews conducted by Echavarren (of the more than 4000 she has done throughout her degree program), originally published in the Diario de Navarra.
The authors have structured the book in an innovative way, allowing the reader to choose his or her own reading path. This flexibility allows the content to be approached from different angles, either starting with the practical interviews or the theoretical analysis of the genre.
Another aspect highlighted in the book is the vindication of journalism in the regional media: the authors argue that there are interviewers and journalists outside the big capitals whose work equals in quality and style those of the most renowned newspapers.
