The research is one of the fundamental pillars in the activity of any university. The University of Navarra has always been committed to quality research as an essential element of its mission statement service to society. It is increasingly evident that the generation of knowledge, the innovation system and in general the scientific research are determining factors in the development of today's societies, and will be even more so in the future.

With this perspective in mind, in 2007 our campus has intensified its efforts to carry out a research of excellence and to broaden its lines of work. To this end, we have proposed to continue supporting the already established research groups and promote to promote new teams that aspire to become international references.

It is not easy to summarize our research activity during this period in a few lines. It is inevitable that initiatives of great specific weight should be left out of these considerations. Thus, we will limit ourselves to pointing out some of the most relevant data and examples. A more complete list of all the projects can be found at report of research of our center.

research scientific-technical and sanitary

In addition to the activity of the research center Applied Medicine (CIMA), detailed in another article of this yearbook, the research scientific-technical and health at the University of Navarra includes many remarkable projects not only in other areas of Biomedicine but also in Physics, Chemistry, Environmental Sciences, Nutrition, Cell and Molecular Biology, Physiology, etc. Some fields of action are already familiar to many Navarrese, who help to finance them through the "You choose, you decide" program of the Caja de Ahorros de Navarra. This is the case of the project of the department of Genetics "Analysis of the genetic mechanisms causing a subject of leukemias", one of the most voted by CAN customers. Other initiatives, such as the treatment of industrial organic waste and its application to soils, or the presence of toxins in food and their implication in human health, obtained an excellent evaluation .

In 2007, three lines of our University with special strategic interest were incorporated to the Parque de la Innovación de Navarra: "Nanotechnologies applied to cancer", "Nutrigenomics in obesity" and "development and innovation of new drugs". The Parque de la Innovación de Navarra is an environment of high scientific and technological quality for the promotion of activities and projects of research and development+I that increase the competitiveness of companies and the wealth of the region.

The work of the high school of Food Sciences (ICAUN) and the European Center for Accident and Injury Prevention (ECIP) has also been intense; as well as the programs of study on the Mediterranean per diem expenses and the prevention of cardiovascular risks of the department of Preventive Medicine. On the other hand, the University Clinic has continued research into therapeutic and diagnostic strategies based on new technologies. In this sense, in 2007, very interesting results have been obtained in the area cell therapy with adult stem cells, in clinical trials with new treatments, or in multidisciplinary programs of study to explore and develop innovative medical imaging techniques. In fact, in recent years the University of Navarra has been making a special effort to intensify the multidisciplinary and collaborative nature of its research at area basic and applied biosanitary.

internationalization and excellence

Another of our strategic commitments is the internationalization of the science produced at campus. In this line, the University School of Nursing has consolidated its collaborations with the universities of Edinburgh, Pennsylvania and Boston College, among others. New this year is the creation of the Chair María Egea for the improvement of the training of nursing professionals.

In other fields of knowledge, the School of Architecture has continued to strengthen its line of research in the History of Architecture of the 20th century. Professor Jorge Tárrago received in 2007 the award for the best thesis in architecture in Europe awarded by the committee International of research in Architecture (CORE), based in Paris. Other areas of great interest that have generated relevant publications are, for example, the Monetary Policies and Econometrics lines of the School of Economic and Business Sciences; the group of programs of study on consumption habits of digital products in childhood and youth of the School of Communication; or the programs of study on Law of business, Global Law and Law of Social Integration of the School of Law.

Finally, the University's technological campus continued its projects in research and development+I in applied mechanics, robotics and computing, among other specialties. An example of the relevance of its programs of study is the European initiative Confidence, which aims to develop a system of remote attendance for the elderly and disabled, with the partnership of nine other partners in the European Union.

If the University's research work could be condensed into one figure, perhaps the most illustrative would be the 1,003 professors with preferential dedication to this activity and the 556 young researchers. The training of the latter was 65% supported by their own sources of funding. The total of expense at research from all the University's centers, including CIMA and CEIT, was more than 56 million euros. In addition to funding from official bodies (European Union and the Central and Regional Governments), we received support from many other sources; for example, the CAN Foundation, the Bank of Santander, or the Centro Académico Romano Foundation. In 2007, the association of Friends of the University contributed 7.6 million euros for the renovation of infrastructures and the granting of aid to young researchers.

Thanks to the scientists' work , 203 books and monographs were published, 1,120 articles were published in prestigious journals, 1,602 communications were presented at national and international congresses and our specialists participated in 568 book chapters.
