Tomás Gómez Cía, graduate of the School of Medicine at the University of Navarra, is the surgeon manager of the second face transplant performed in Spain, at the Virgen del Rocío Hospital in Seville. "Every day that you help someone is satisfying because for each patient their problem is the most important," he says.

The operation, which lasted 24 hours, has been prepared for 15 months and required a team of 25 professionals. According to this specialist in Plastic, Aesthetic and Reconstructive Surgery, the patient evolves well, but it is necessary to wait months to see result.

"There is practically no history of such an operation, only 8 or 9 cases. It is like a sum of others, plus the support of the hospital (Anatomy pathology, immunology, etc.). You have to review everything, contact the groups, have the protocol, the permits, prepare the patient.... It involves a lot of organization so that one day, which we don't know when it will come, the patient will have everything at his disposal", explains Dr. Gómez Cía.

After finishing the residency program at the Hospital Virgen del Rocio in Seville, this former student of the University of Navarra enjoyed a scholarship bioengineering for a year and a half. Subsequently, he worked in the Burn Unit of that center until the year 2000, when he obtained by civil service examination the place head of service of Plastic Surgery and major burns.
