"In the pro-person attitude is the root of change", said Rafael de Lorenzo, University Secretary of the ONCE General committee , during the first session of the II Cycle "Training to understand disability". The event, held at the University of Navarra, was presented by the Alumni Vice President , Tomás Gómez-Acebo.

During the session, which was attended by around 300 people, Rafael de Lorenzo offered a vision of disability from a legal perspective. He assured that we are facing a considerable human problem since in Spain there are currently four million people who suffer from some kind of disability. "The problem is when that difference, from subject , becomes inequality," he said.

He explained that much progress has been made in recent years in the area of recognition of the rights of persons with disabilities, but that it is necessary to move from rights to facts: "There is still a very large deficit in terms of compliance with these standards". And he added: "When we talk about not discriminating we have to introspect and analyze how we each relate to the people around us who are different from us".

In this sense, he emphasized that humanity will improve when there is a profound cultural change in people's behavior , in which each person recognizes him/herself in the other. And he questioned some things that from a human approach of responsibility staff, citizenship and politics can be done so that things improve in the future. "We must be citizens in solidarity on a daily basis, we cannot adopt a posture of indifference towards the problem of the other", he pointed out.

De Lorenzo also encouraged the students and members of the associations that participated in the lecture to fight for things: "When you fight you achieve, if not everything, then an important part of your dreams. You should never give up.

The next session of the Cycle, which will be attended by José Iribas, Councilor of Education of the Government of Navarra, will be held on Monday, February 9, from 2 to 3 p.m. at auditorium of Science Library of the academic center.
