Nearly 300 people reflect on the development of monographs

Students and teachers from 11 schools meet at the 2nd edition of the Monograph Fair

The University of Navarra hosted last Saturday, February 2, a workshop on the elaboration of monographs, a work of research own subject of teaching-learning of high school diploma International. This workshop was attended by students from 11 schools in Cantabria, Castilla y León, Catalonia, Huesca, Madrid, Valencia and the capital of Navarre.

He then gave way to the plenary session which was degree scroll: "The monograph beyond the IB". given by Nina Franco, coordinator of monographs at the American School of Bilbao who explained the future challenges facing society and the skills that through the monograph can develop to meet challenges such as: the effect of climate change, the impact and future use of technologies, cryptocurrency as a substitute for circular currency, among others. In addition, he encouraged students to "seek critical thinking, and to have a spirit of partnership with society", instructions that encourages the organization of the high school diploma International.

After this introduction, the students attended specific workshops on the different areas in which they can develop their monograph, with the goal to introduce the specific guidelines to which they should pay attention according to the area in which their topic of research deals with: Biology, History, Philosophy, Environmental Systems, language, Mathematics and Physics.

This is the second workshop in this subject organized by the School from Education and Psychology in partnership with the high school San Patricio. Its aim is to goal provide guidelines on the elaboration of these works to 1st year students who are about to prepare them, as well as to teachers who are starting to supervise the elaboration of these works. high school diploma students, as well as to teachers who are starting to supervise the elaboration of these works.  What is a monograph and why is the IB an innovative teaching ?

The monograph is a work of research made by students between 15 and 17 years old on a specific area (social, science) and a specific topic . In this monograph, students develop a research program in a work of about 4000 words. This monograph reflects what they have learned at school and develops their communication and thinking skills, their self-management, their capacity for reflection and research, and their social skills.

"The International Baccalaureate (IB) offers high school diploma International Baccalaureate (IB), offers instructional programs and assessment, based on an inquiry-based teaching ," explains Monica Sepulveda, coordinator of the Master's Degree University academic staff (MUP), and teacher of this modality in it. "It is a curricular program that was born 50 years ago, with a approach teaching -learning that is still innovative today. "It implies a change in relation to the responsibility for learning, since part of it passes from the teacher to student". He adds, "It is an inquiry-based teaching in which the teacher's primary role is to encourage questioning rather than to provide answers."

In the last 10 years, there has been an increase in the number of schools offering one of the four programs offered by the International Primary School Program (ISP). high school diploma International Primary School Program (PYP), Middle Years Program (MYP), Diploma Program (PYP), and career guidance Program (POP). There are currently around 5,000 schools in the world that offer some of the programs. Specifically in Spain, there are 113 schools that offer them, approximately 15 are in the process of accreditation. This number, explains Sepúlveda, has increased "since the government recognized the program as valid for university entrance".

In Navarra, the centers that offer the Diploma program are high school San Cernin, Irabia-Izaga and I.E.S Navarro Villoslada. In addition, there are two other centers that are in the process of accreditation.
