Juan José Lahuerta, professor of Art History at the School of Architecture in Barcelona, said today at the University of Navarra that when talking about the Spanish avant-garde we should remember the following sentence by the writer Gertrude Stein: "In the 19th century, painting in France was made by French people. Abroad, painting did not exist. In the 20th century, painting in France is done by Spaniards". This is what she said during her speech at discussion paper in the VII International Architecture congress of the University of Navarra.

"With this quotation Gertrude Stein is referring to Picasso, Juan Gris and Cubist painters. And she makes it clear that modern, avant-garde painting does not exist outside France," the expert explained.

Other speakers taking part in the VII International Architecture congress of the University of Navarra, graduate in this edition "Journeys in the transition of Spanish architecture towards modernity", are Enrique X. lecture de Anda(University of Mexico), who will speak on the influence of the Alhambra in Granada on Luis Barragán; Joaquín Medina Warmburg(University of Kaiserlautern), who will give a talk entitled "The modern journey and its symbolic forms"; and José Manuel Pozo (University of Navarra), who will focus his speech on the journeys made by García Mercadal and Ortiz-Echagüe.

An international congress

Yolanda Barcina, Mayor of Pamplona, participated in the inauguration of the event and highlighted the relevance of the international outreach of congress and thanked the University of Navarra for the invitation. Ángel J. Gómez-Montoro, President of the academic center, also participated and thanked all the attendees for their presence, especially Mark Wigley, Dean of the School of Architecture of Columbia University, and Beatriz Colomina, from Princeton University, who collaborated in the organization of the congress by holding a previous workshop at Columbia University (New York) last November.

"It is important to intensify the International Office and seek inspiration and ways of doing things in universities around the world. It is a source of joy and a sign of maturity to note the variety of origins and backgrounds that bring together the authors of the papers and speakers of this congress", said the President. issue "I would also like to point out the high number of Latin American architects attending today, which reinforces the university's interest in maintaining a close relationship with the architecture schools of these countries, something that led us to launch the First Biennial of Latin American Architecture last year," he concluded.
