Evgeniya Gutova, PhD in Linguistics from the Sorbonne University (Paris), will join group from research 'Public discourse' of the Institute for Culture and Society (ICS) of the University of Navarra, thanks to the prestigious financial aid Juan de la Cierva, granted by the Ministry of Science and Innovation. At the center, the expert will develop a comparativeresearch of multilingualism in Morocco and in the Moroccan community in Spain.

Specifically, the expert will compare the cultural and linguistic practices between the Arabic Berber speakers of Morocco and the Berber community settled in Spain. According to various programs of study, half of the Moroccan population is native Berber. "Spain has 1.5 million Moroccan immigrants but their linguistic status is barely understood and Berber has been made invisible," Gutova pointed out.

The researcher will focus on two topics. On the one hand, she will study the results of the linguistic contact , that is, the influence of Arabic and Berber in the Moroccan community settled in Spain. On the other hand, it will detect the similarities and differences between the folklore and heritage developed between Moroccan and Spanish speakers. These data will be complemented with the edition of an open access online corpus of data .

Research in North Africa

Gutova is an expert in descriptive linguistics, language documentation, linguistic variations, programs of study of corpora and linguistic typologies. Her research has focused on the North African Berber community, with whom she has conducted programs of study fieldwork since 2011. In addition, with Pandemic, she has developed a system for conducting field programs of study in linguistics remotely.

This research is in line with the work developed in 'Public discourse' on folklore in North Morocco. In addition, the group of research has a wide network of experts in North Africa. "I look forward to collaborating with researcher Sarali Gintsburg, an expert in methodologies for working on folklore," Gutova emphasized. The researcher aims to contribute to the ICS's goal to understand the human being and to respond to the global challenges of society.

The Juan de la Cierva Incorporation grants are co-funded by the European Union's NextGenerationEU Recovery Plan. These grants are awarded for a period of three years to encourage the recruitment of talented researchers who have recently defended their thesis.
