"Doctors cannot always cure or palliate, but we must always accompany", explained Rocío Sánchez-Carpintero, a neuropediatrician at the Clínica Universidad de Navarra during the third session of the II Cycle 'Training to understand disability'.

The doctor offered a vision of disability from the field of medicine. In this sense, she explained the evolution that has taken place in recent years in the existing models for dealing with disability: from the medicalmodel , "focused more on health than on the quality of life of the person"; passing through the socialmodel , "where disability was simply a difference, disability did not exist", to the current biopsychosocialmodel , "a model that takes into account the biological and psychological characteristics of the individual and of the people with whom he/she interacts, and of the society that welcomes the person with disability".

Of the latter he said that "we are facing an ambitious model that tries to address the person in a comprehensive and integrative way, although in the internship still has its shortcomings".

During the session, he also pointed out the importance of knowing how to distinguish between impairment, handicap and disability. "In neuropediatrics we deal with impairment," he said. He added: "I can rarely cure as a physician, but that is a door that opens for me and that leads me down a different path than curing. That is what led me to become a neuropediatrician."

The course, organized by Tantaka, the Solidarity Time Bank of the University of Navarra, was attended by more than 300 people, including students, professors, associations and citizens of Pamplona. attendance .

The next session will be on Monday, February 23, from 2 to 3 p.m., at auditorium of the Science Library of the University of Navarra. It will be given by Feli Peralta, professor at department of Education of the University of Navarra, who will offer a vision of disability from the family perspective.
